Flora’s mother was the famous Anita Montrose, much sought-after writer of witty articles in magazines and star of radio and television.

Some people envied Flora for being the daughter of such a celebrity, but she grew up knowing that her mother regarded her as an encumbrance, best sent away to school and palmed off on to friends in the holidays. So she determined that if she ever married, she would always put her family first, never let a career interfere with it.
